COOKIES IN A NUTSHELL

WHAT'S A COOKIE?
A cookie is a piece of text which a server requests to save on your hard drive when you visit a web site. Other areas within the same web site may then retrieve the cookie from your browser and use this information to print out a web page, customize pages to your needs, or to record information about web traffic.

HOW DOES CELLAR-HOMEBREW.COM USE COOKIES?
In the case of cellar-homebrew.com, the cookie is just an Order ID number assigned if you use the shopping basket system to compile an order. When you add an item to your basket, or take a look at the items you have compiled so far, the cookie tells the shopping basket program which basket is yours. Basically, this allows several users to place orders at once, without all the users grabbing for the same basket!

WHAT'S THE BAD RAP ABOUT COOKIES?
There are two kinds of cookies: long-term and short-term. The long-term kind is used by many sites to keep a track record of your use of their site. They may use long-term cookies to customize pages to your interests, to monitor the effectiveness of their site design, or to create a more interactive visiting experience. On the other hand, they may also use cookies to keep a very personalized record of your own personal use of their site. Since many web surfers assume "anonymity" when they are viewing a site, some consider long-term cookies to be a breach of privacy.

We do not use long-term cookies at our site. The Order ID number assigned during the use of the shopping basket system is erased as soon as your internet session is over (when your browser program is closed). The cookie does not store any personal information whatsoever, and it is only utilized while the order is being processed.

Most browsers will give a few options for how to deal with cookies. Generally, you can refuse all cookies, accept only the cookies you agree to, or accept all cookies. Whether or not you'd like to refuse cookies on other sites, the shopping basket system at cellar-homebrew.com will need to use a cookie to keep track of your order during processing. You can find information on configuring your browser's cookies on our web troubleshooting page. If you would rather not accept even a short-term cookie, please see the alternative ordering options as listed described on our ordering information page.
